Ivy Brand Organic Farm

Farming Practices

Soil Management

We use cover crops, compost and rock powders to maintain soil fertility.  We also rotate crops to prevent depletion of the soil.

Pest Management

If we have a bug problem, we use botanicals and/or predators to bring the system back into balance.  Crop rotation and companion planting are other tools we use.

Organic Certification

We have completed four years of transitional organic certification, and have earned full organic certification. Other farms that we work with are also certified organic, and we will work with chemical free start-up farms to help them get certified.

*Many farms that follow organic practices choose not to become certified for financial reasons, time constraints (it is a long, complicated application) or just lack of faith in the government to oversee something so precious.  I wish that we could get back to close relationships with the people who produce food and thereby make the certification process less necessary, but that is tough in the modern world.
